Everything You want to Know

Before Stepping on the mat

Curious About Taekwondo?
Start Here

Starting something new can bring a lot of questions — and we’re here to make the answers simple. Whether your child is just beginning their martial arts journey or you’re stepping onto the mat for the first time yourself, our FAQ covers the things families ask most about Taekwondo. From class structure to safety, uniforms to black belt preparation, here’s everything you need to feel confident before your first class.

What age can my child start Taekwondo?

Children can begin as young as 2 in our Tiny Tigers program, which focuses on fun, coordination, and confidence. More structured training begins at age 4 in our Youth program.

Do kids (or beginners) have to spar right away?

Nope! Beginners focus on safe, no-contact drills and techniques. Sparring is introduced gradually, only for older or more advanced students, and always with proper gear and supervision.

How often should we attend classes?

This depends fully on how quickly you would like to advance belts. 2-3 classes per week is the minimum we suggest, but most of our students come 3-5 times per week. We offer flexible packages so you can train regularly while fitting Taekwondo into your family’s schedule.

What should I wear to my first class?

Just come in comfortable athletic clothes. Once enrolled, you’ll receive a Taekwondo uniform (dobok) to wear for training and belt testing.

Is Taekwondo safe?

Yes! Safety is our top priority. We use padded floors, soft equipment for younger kids, and protective gear for sparring. Classes are taught by certified, experienced instructors.

How long does it take to earn a black belt?

On average, it takes about 3–5 years of consistent training, depending on age, dedication, and attendance. Students only test when they’re fully prepared, so every belt is truly earned.

Will Taekwondo make my child (or me) aggressive?

Quite the opposite. Taekwondo teaches respect, discipline, and self-control. Students often become calmer, more focused, and more confident both in and out of class.

Am I too old to start Taekwondo?

Never! Many of our adult students start with zero martial arts background. Classes are tailored to your fitness and experience level, and you’ll train at your own pace.

Do I need to be in shape before starting?

Not at all. Taekwondo training will help you get in shape. We focus on building strength, flexibility, and endurance gradually, so everyone can start right where they are.

What benefits will I or my child gain outside of martial arts?

Beyond fitness and self-defense, Taekwondo builds life skills: discipline, perseverance, confidence, stress relief, respect for others, and being part of a supportive community.
